ILevel one · the bridal seam

The gold runs wide here.

The cases go from the wedding chest to the everyday tray: bridal sets, the bangle boards the house is loud about, rings for gents and ladies, bracelets and kadas, and antique work like the temple haram standing beside this.

Natural diamonds sit in their own trays, and the counter will bring any of it into the light for you, piece by piece.

IILevel two · the silver lode

A room that is all silver.

Glass shelves stacked with silver vessels, bowls and pooja articles.
The silver shelves

Shelf over shelf of vessels, lamps and pooja articles, with the festival pieces that come out for Ugadi. Silverware is its own department in this house, not a tray at the end of the gold counter.

Silver exchange is taken at the counter, and the festival board brings making charge offers on silver when the season turns.

IIILevel three · the exchange

Old gold, new fire.

Bring the piece you have outgrown and leave with the one you came for. The exchange is a standing practice of the house, on gold and on silver articles, with purity assessed at the counter in front of you.

Made to order pieces are taken against an advance, so a wedding order is booked, dated and signed rather than promised.

What the family wore once can become what the family wears next.

IVLevel four · the festival board

When the season turns, the board goes up.

Akshaya Tritiya and Ugadi each bring their own bonanza board to the door: the kind of offers the house is known for, changing when the festival does. The numbers live on the board and on their WhatsApp, never on a page that could go stale.

AThe assay office

Every piece answers for itself.

Every gold ornament here is 916 hallmarked and carries its HUID, the six character code the Bureau of Indian Standards records against that one piece: its purity, its assaying centre, its date.

Ask at the counter and they will show you the piece checked in the free BIS CARE app while you watch. A house that welcomes the check is telling you something.

Back to the surface

At half past eight, the street finds out.

The screen over their door is cut like a jewel case. All day it stands grey and quiet, and at closing time it turns into the lamp of Swarna Nagar.

The RR Jewellers shopfront by day: a grey perforated screen with brass lettering over the door. The same shopfront after dark, the perforated screen glowing gold.
1st Cross by day. The jaali waits over the door. Half past eight. The jaali is lit, and the street knows where the gold is.

Then come at ten.
